He is Risen! He is Risen indeed!
Easter is a precious time to celebrate. For me, March 16, 1954 is my spiritual birthday. My journey back, like the Prodigal, into the realm of the Kingdom happened on that day. This is 64 years of active duty. To my delight, the journey becomes brighter and the issues become clearer. He is Risen!
The theme for Easter has always been joy. It was for me personally. It continues to be so for all of us who celebrate God’s wisdom, recognizing the breathtaking way in which He sustains us in Himself.
Joy is a mark of maturity. It is used some 58X in the New Testament. It is a required word to describe the activity of God in the Old Testament, surprised to discover Joy used 112X in the OT. Listen as King David speaks in Psalm 51:12: “Restore unto me the Joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit.”
On this Easter, our joy is full. Our testimony parallels that of David. He is actually restoring us. What I am eager to share is a workable definition and instructions for us to identify that joy, discover its source, and walk in joy as a source of strength. Listen, carefully, to the Lenten instructions of a most godly man named Henri Nouwen, whom Judith and I have engaged for most of our journey. Preparing to write this letter, Judith presented this piece of Easter wisdom. We have been feeding on it for some days. It is Joy that serves as our spiritual strength. Judith, myself, with all of the LC staff, seek to impart that joy to each of you, wrapped in His Life and Presence.
Joy does not come from positive predictions about the state of the world. It does not depend on the ups and downs of the circumstances or our lives. Joy is based on the spiritual knowledge that, while the world in which we live is shrouded in darkness, God has overcome the world. Jesus says it loudly and clearly: “In the world you will have troubles, but rejoice, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
The surprise is not that, unexpectedly, things turn out better than expected. No, the real surprise is that God’s Light is more real than all of the darkness, that God’s Truth is more powerful than all human lies, that God’s Love is stronger than death.
His prayer: Lord, help me to see that I don’t have to overcome the troubles of the world by myself. Help me trust in what Jesus has already done! (Renewed For Life, pg. 23).
