The Ten Words and Ungoverned Desires
The Ten Words (commandments) are God’s simple request, “If you love Me, you can show it by doing these ten things.” He intended for them to function as the conscience of the nation, determining what was and was not pleasing in His sight (Deut. 30:11-14). In this Plumbline, Bob presents the road to the destruction of a civilization. He describes how a society or individual who refuses God’s restraints and governing influences of their human desires will face judgment which is inevitable and consequential. When ungoverned desires are continually stimulated and repeatedly denied, it results in a whole society which is not only capable of immorality, but will with that desire rationalize and justify that behavior.
The law Jesus gave in the New Testament consists of two parts—loving God and loving our neighbor (Mark 12:301-31). When we keep our love for God alive, keep our love for one another alive; His love controls us (2 Cor. 5:14). Love is the fulfillment of the Law because once I have learned to love God, I can no longer do you wrong.
